Automatic perfect subtitle matching via movie hash — what is it

Movie-hash matching is a technique an IPTV player uses to automatically find a frame-perfect subtitle, by comparing a unique digital fingerprint of the video file against known releases.

How it works

Instead of searching by title and year (which can return several, slightly different releases), the app computes a hash of the exact video file. If that matches a release OpenSubtitles has subtitles for, the match is guaranteed frame-perfect — no syncing needed.

When this doesn't work

With a live stream (instead of a fixed, local file) or a slow connection while computing the hash, the search falls back to a regular title search. That still returns usable subtitles, just not guaranteed to be frame-perfect.

What to do if the automatic match isn't perfect

Use the manual sync adjustment (see syncing subtitles) to correct a small drift, or look for a different upload made specifically for your release.
